I’ve read about many aspects of social media usage and its adverse affect on us but not one that explores this nuance of aesthetic and desirability—especially when I’ve been unconsciously feeding into it
You so brilliantly put into words the observations you have made. I honestly am so burdened by the noise of social media, I have a constant need to fix the world and trust the advice of others whom ive only ever seen through a screen. until recently I haven’t had tik Tok as it would only cause more harm than good, im bound to instagram as my friends refuse to communicate any other way, the true places online I can not only receive, process, and then move on with new helpful knowlege is substack, you are one of those writers who I love to hear from <3
On the topic of the aesthetic of thought as trend, I was just recently thinking about writing about the influence of the Dark Academic aesthetic against the actual academia parts.
There is a big authenticity epidemic and I feel like it's genuinely watering down good-natured intent in most communities.
please do! i was going to reference dark academia here cuz it’s a really popular one haha. i feel like it’s the precursor to thought daughter in a way.
you put words to something i've been witnessing for so long now, but never knew how to explain or call out. thank you for this beautiful, hard-hitting piece !! xx
„I will promise to become familiar with myself.“ I felt this deeply. Somehow, I feel like a shell of myself, filled with the opinions and aesthetics of others. Enough is enough.
'Reject desirability' smacked me in the face with the situation women find themselves in time and again . So now it's happening to everyone, not just women.
a lovely hard-hitting piece, made me feel a lot more self conscious about the influence of “aesthetics” towards the recent authenticity epidemic. people are becoming less original, less authentic and that’s just depressing
such an important read and wake-up call for writers and, well, everyone. more and more I feel like making life aesthetically pleasing is just a capitalistic ploy to make us more conservative and focused on buying things instead of caring about the world, nature and people. the psychology of social media is so fucked up... i get so sad when i see young girls changing their entire faces just for the beauty standards imposed by influencers, or by instagram filters. i almost fell for that, but thankfully i got away in time. amazing piece!!
This is really interesting, very well said. I'm from Argentina and can notice people in tiktok discussing this subjects about the USA. Not really understanding the difference between our countries but I'm glad the people are becoming aware of the fascist intentions of the current government. I'm becoming scared of the lack of intent to protest in forms other than sharing an IG story but I believe we are seriously getting tired of being toyed with. I will share this, thank you
The moral corruption centres on the use of force of society, which leads to money manipulation and vote buying - among many other terrible outcomes.
Nothing in what you think you care about actually maps onto the moral problems in society.
But keep on with it I guess. Maybe if you punch enough Nazis or “protect marriage rights” hard enough, you’ll find your white-less utopia. Fuck those women who want to be stay at home moms, am I right? Nazis, the lot of them.
Seriously, stay away from philosophy… it’s not your forte.
So good. I identified with the importance of art and writers… I’ve been thinking a lot about that of late. Well done.
love u mom
I love you too. I am so proud of you.
